For one night only, the iconic New York nightclub will open its doors for a party from luxury brand Valentino
Studio 54 is set to reopen for the first time in 43 years this week.
On Wednesday (September 10), the legendary New York nightclub will open its doors for one night only for an event hosted by luxury cosmetics brand Valentino Beauty.
Announced via a cryptic Instagram post last week (September 1), Valentino Beauty eluded to the revival of the storied disco hotspot, which, in its hey-day, was regarded as the “world’s best nightclub”.
According to V Magazine, the guestlist is set to include artists, creatives and “original patrons” of Studio 54, as the brand celebrates the launch of its Born in Roma Rendez-Vous ivory cosmetics line.
Studio 54 was first launched by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager in 1977, becoming known as a focal point of the late-’70s disco movement, and as a space for extravagance and hedonism.
The nightclub quickly developed a reputation as a celebrity hotspot, surging in popularity after an iconic photograph of Bianca Jagger arriving at the venue on a white horse was published in May 1977.
In the years following, Studio 54 would attract an eye-watering list of stars including Grace Jones, Dolly Parton, Jackie Kennedy, Andy Warhol, Cher, Freddie Mercury, and more.
Studio 54 was initially shuttered in 1980 after New York City authorities voted to remove the club’s alcohol license, citing widespread drug use and tax evasion charges against owners, Rubell and Schrager.
The venue reopened under new ownership in 1981, however the building – a former opera house – had become dilapidated and required “extensive” renovations, resulting in another sale and then the loss of its license, and eventual closure in 1989.
