A classic documentary on DJing is returning to UK cinemas for a limited run next month.
Hang The DJ, directed by Marco and Mauro La Villa, premiered at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 1998. One of the first documentaries to explore the artistry behind DJing, it featured insights from the likes of A-Trak, Carl Cox, Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez, Mix Master Mike, Larry Levan and Roger Sanchez.
Next month, the film will return to four UK theatres in Glasgow, Broadstairs, London and Manchester from May 14th through 24th. Each screening will feature either the original 35mm projection or a 4K scan of the original print. All proceeds from the run, presented by Never Sleep, will go to harm reduction non-profit With You and Endometriosis UK.
There are also a series of panel talks and introductions to go alongside each showing. Clyde Built Radio will host a panel talk after the screening at Glasgow’s Film Theatre on May 14th; Joe Shabadu and Dr. Lulu Levay will lead a Q&A at The Palace Cinema in Broadstairs on May 22nd. A London date on May 23rd will be followed by a panel talk with a TBA host, while Warehouse Project resident Krysko will introduce a final screening at Manchester’s Treehouse Hotel on May 24th.
