Roland has announced a global tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of its well-loved SP-404 sampler.
The “404 Day” series kicked off yesterday, April 3rd, with an initial US run set to stop in Atlanta, Toronto, Philadelphia, Sacramento, Portland, Detroit, Boston, and Los Angeles. Additional dates have also been announced in Tokyo, Osaka, Rome, São Paulo, Mumbai, Brisbane and Berlin.
The series includes events like beat battles, artist panels and live performances from, as a statement from Roland puts it, “the DJs, producers, and beatmakers who have built careers and cultural movements around the SP-404.” Select Roland stores, including those in London and Tokyo, will also host separate anniversary parties with in-store workshops and equipment demos. Participating Roland events will feature in-person giveaways of limited-edition merch, instruments and Roland Cloud memberships.
Heavily influenced by early ’90s rave culture, designer Kenji Yamada rolled out the first SP-404 in 2005. Since then, the device has grown increasingly popular in styles like reggaetón, hip-hop, and lo-fi. The latest SP-404MKII update includes a collaboration with Serato—the supplementary DJ tool offers plug-and-play setup, premapped control stems and a host of other additional features.
