The study from Clubbing.TV boss Laureline Teste tracked over 980 artists bookings spanning five months.
Only 22 percent of artists booked to play Ibiza’s major rooms this season identify as female or gender fluid, a new study has found.
The analysis, led by journalist and Clubbing.TV boss Laureline Teste, tracked Instagram announcements and Ibiza Spotlight listings to compile a data set, excluding events with incomplete line-ups to ensure consistency. Teste told Resident Advisor that after conducting a similar study in 2023, she was “curious to see if things had improved two years later.”
Out of the 980 bookings the study tracked, just 214 were artists identifying as female or non-binary, compared to 766 men. Residencies with the greatest gender disparity, per the data set, include Marco Carola at Pacha Ibiza (9.7 percent: seven women, 65 men), The Martinez Brothers at Hï Ibiza (12.1 percent: seven women, 51 men), Bedouin at Chinois Ibiza (12.1 percent: four women, 21 men) and CircoLoco at DC-10 (19 percent: 24 women and 98 men).
“The ecosystem still operates like an exclusive boys’ club,” Teste told Resident Advisor: “You see the same male residents inviting each other season after season, reinforcing the same networks—meanwhile, there’s an entire generation of talented women and non-binary artists often sidelined or slotted into opening sets or side rooms.”
On the other end of the spectrum, Pyramid at Amnesia, Francis Mercier presents Solèy at Chinois, Carl Cox at [UNVRS] and Defected at Pacha were found to have the most gender-diverse bills. Roughly one-third of the artists booked for each season lineup identified as female or non-binary.
While current figures reflect a slight improvement from 2023, Teste told RA the marginal uptick reflects a “systemic” issue. “In 2025, there are countless female and gender-diverse producers and DJs ready to take these stages,” she said. “Until there’s a structural shift in how line-ups in Ibiza are built and who gets invited into those conversations, we’ll keep hovering around that 20 percent mark.”
RA‘s review of the dataset found stark disparities across season residencies from elrow (18 percent: 10 women, 42 men), CamelPhat (11 percent: five women, 38 men), Joseph Capriati (21 percent: 31 women, 114 men) and Black Coffee (25 percent: 19 women, 56 men). Even at women-led residencies, male-centric dynamics persist, evidenced by the season lineups for BLOND:ISH at Pacha (six women and 26 men) and MËSTIZA at Hï (five women and 33 men.)
RA reached out to multiple promoters and venues referenced in the research—including The Night League, Amnesia and Elrow—for comment. A spokesperson for Pacha said: “We curate our line-ups based on artist integrity, talent and quality. We don’t discriminate based on gender or other personal aspects. Our goal is a diverse and inclusive environment, and we’re always open to promoting diversity within the scene.”
Steven Braines, head of events at Defected and cofounder of HE.SHE.THEY., acknowledged the gender gap, saying it was part of the reason he was recently hired by the label. Lineups at Defected’s flagship and Glitterbox events feature 20 percent and 28 percent female or gender-fluid artists, respectively. “Men have been pushed as headliners for decades and because of that machinery, they sell the most tickets,” he explained.
According to Braines, HE.SHE.THEY nights are among the few in Ibiza to consistently approach or exceed a 50/50 gender split. Defected’s in-house program Elevate supports underrepresented talent, and Braines confirmed a new female booker will be joining the team. He cited artists like Indira Paganotto, Hannah Laing, Arielle Free, SYREETA and HoneyLuv as “proof that diversity can and does have commercial appeal and a bright future on the island.”
