The Detroit techno pioneer has created a new film with dancer Sophie Boursier, set inside Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum.
Jeff Mills has created a new audiovisual work responding to Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, which will premiere during Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) this month.
Conceived by local promoter Audio Obscura, the film was created inside the Rijksmuseum and features music by Mills alongside a performance from dancer Sophie Boursier. Director Hans Pannecoucke filmed the work in the museum’s Gallery of Honour, where The Night Watch is displayed.
Mills’ interpretation imagines the arrival of Marie de’ Medici, using her association with arts patronage as a starting point for the music and choreography. The story is an imagined response to Rembrandt’s painting rather than a historical account of the scene depicted.
The film will premiere by invitation on October 21st, ahead of public screenings at the Rijksmuseum’s auditorium from October 22nd through 25th. Browse Instagram for more information.
