The Bed-Stuy club reopens 1st August with a month of shows featuring Saunderson, Joey Beltram and more.
New York club Paragon will reopen in August.
Confirming the news today (16th July), the Bed-Stuy club – which was forced to close its doors in April due to rising costs – announced that it had been given a “generous lifeline” from Detroit techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson that has enabled it to open once again.
The legendary Brooklyn-born DJ, synonymous with the foundation of Detroit techno as part of The Belleville Three, is now an official partner and resident at the club, and will play its official reopneing party on 1st August alongside Carlos Souffront, Ashley Venom, star coyado, and Ana B. According to a press release, the two DJ sets Saunderson played in the venue last year helped “reaffirm his connection to the neighbourhood”.
“Coming back to Brooklyn, where my story started, and bringing what Detroit gave me—it feels like a full-circle moment,” Saunderson explained. “Clubs like the Paradise Garage and the Loft shaped my soul, and now Paragon gives me the chance to give that energy back to a new generation.”
In a statement shared with DJ Mag, club founder John Barclay, who was also part of the team behind the indefinitely closed Bossa Nova Civic Club, said: “Early American techno was the literal inspiration for this entire project, so to be able to partner with one of the pioneers, one of the people who kicked off this movement that we are all so obsessed with is absolutely invigorating and surreal… We are excited to show you what we’ve been working on.”
Other DJs locked for residencies at Paragon going forward are Joey Beltram, DJ Byrell the Great, TYGAPAW, Boy Harsher’s Augustus Muller and quest?onmarq.
The rest of August will feature appearances from Beltram, Safety Trance and UNIIQU3. Programming will be limited to Fridays for the time being, with the exception of Dominican night on Sunday, 10th August. Regular Friday and Saturday scheduling will resume from September onwards with line-ups and tickets to be announced in due course.
